Acclaimed NJ chef to open second restaurant in Hoboken — with global eats, and booze

Are you a fan of chef Ehren Ryan's fine dining Millburn restaurant Common Lot? Then do we have news for you: Along with his wife and business partner Nadine, Ryan is opening another North Jersey culinary project; BYRD.

And, if it's anything like their first spot? It's going to be a powerhouse.

Bringing 'globally-inspired' fare to Hoboken

"We are super excited to be opening our second restaurant in Hoboken," the chef wrote on Instagram. "We can't wait to meet the community there and share our globally inspired food."

In an interview with us, Ryan elaborated on the concept.

"We are going for a much more casual, family friendly community restaurant with BYRD," he said. "We are still going to have influences from Common Lot, but we're also going to have some burgers, steaks and pasta. We'll even have a kids' menu."

If you haven't been to Common Lot yet, some of its menu highlights include Black Angus Beef Tartare and Roasted Duck Breast with truffle sauce, so, though BYRD will be boasting beef, cheese and buns, we still expect everything to be prepared in a high-end way.

In addition to food, the new restaurant (which will be located at 800 Jackson Street in Downtown Hoboken) will also feature "a great wine list" and creative cocktails, as the team plans to have a liquor license; something Common Lot does not. The Ryans are crusaders for accessible alcohol, though — and have been working tirelessly to help overhaul Jersey's antiquated liquor license laws — so, "hopefully soon" that will change.

Until then, however, if you want to enjoy a craft drink from the team? BYRD will be the place to do it.

Staying up to date:

As of now, an official launch date for BYRD has not been set in stone, but Chef Ryan plans on an early 2024 opening.

"It will definitely be in the first quarter of 2024," he said, "But in terms of dates — I can't say for sure yet. Probably pushing March."

To stay up to date with the progress of the launch, then, we suggest monitoring BYRD's official Instagram page; @byrd.nj.
