Academy Pushes Back Governors Awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) has moved the 14th Governors Awards, which is a union production, to a new date. Working closely with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), the Academy has moved the awards show to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza from November 18, 2023 to January 9, 2024.
The month of January is already crowded with awards events, and as the strikes continue, more moves will likely take place. The Golden Globes air on January 7 (network unknown), SAG nominations voting concludes on that date, SAG nominations are announced on January 10, and Oscar nominations voting begins 9 a.m. PT on January 11.

This year’s Oscars will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 10, 2024, just about a year off from Oscars 2023.
While the 2023 Academy Museum Gala obtained permission from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in order to proceed with its October 14 fundraiser to honor Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola, the Governors Awards event is designed to pull in Oscar contenders from AMPTP member studios and streamers as well as indies for its glittery Oscar season event.
The rescheduled January 9 show will present Honorary Awards to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and editor Carol Littleton and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter. The Honorary Oscar statuette is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”
