The Academy has revealed the list of eligible films for consideration in best animated, documentary and international feature of the year, encompassing a broad range of blockbusters and critically acclaimed titles.

GKids’ “The Boy and the Heron,” Pixar’s “Elemental,” Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” are among the 33 animated films in the running. This is up from 27 in 2023, when “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” took home the prize.

More from Variety

The eventual five nominees are determined by members of the shorts and animation branch, and any Academy members outside the branch who wish to participate. The number of outside members who opt in is unknown. All films submitted for animated feature also qualify for the Academy Awards in other categories, including best picture.

There are 88 films representing their countries for the international feature Oscar, including France’s “The Taste of Things,” Germany’s “The Teachers’ Lounge” and the U.K.’s “The Zone of Interest.” This is down from 92 last year, which saw Germany taking home the statuette for “All Quiet on the Western Front.”

Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate in the preliminary round of voting. The number of Academy members that choose to vote in the category is unknown, but sources who work on awards campaigns tell Variety it’s typically between 1,000 and 1,200 members each year. The shortlist of 15 films that will advance to the nomination voting stage will be announced on Dec. 21.

Netflix’s “American Symphony,” Magnolia’s “Little Richard: I Am Everything” and Abramorama’s “32 Sounds” are listed among the 167 nonfiction titles vying for Academy attention. Documentary features that have won a qualifying film festival award or have been submitted in the international feature category as their country’s official selection are also eligible. Films submitted in the doc category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including best picture. The shortlist and nominees are determined by members of the Documentary Branch. The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Not all movies have had their required qualifying releases and must fulfill those in order to comply with the category’s other qualifying rules.
