Cruz, a former pupil at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, was apprehended within an hour after the shooting, less than a mile away from the school. He has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder but has not yet entered a plea.
James and Kimberly Snead say Cruz, who was living with them at the time of the attack, had lost his mother to complications of pneumonia in November 2017.
The couple claims that while they believed their houseguest was depressed, he showed no warning signs of violence and never saw him acting out.
“He abided by every rule to the T,” says James, insisting that Nikolas Cruz was both respectful and well behaved.
He describes Cruz as naïve. “We had to teach him how to use the microwave, teach him how to do laundry – just being independent – things a 19-year-old should know how to do,” he says.
The Sneads claim Cruz told them he’d had a difference of opinion with the family he’d been staying with prior to him coming to live with them, over whether he could keep firearms.
What do they say they knew about his alleged history of violence and instability at the school where he is accused of opening fire?
