Abandoning the Royal Family? What's Going on with Prince Harry and Meghan Markel Giving up Their Titles?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have recently been in the headlines for the desire to potentially relinquish their royal titles, amid demands that they do so. Whether or not this is actual fact or hearsay, we're not sure, but the implications are very real, if the couple does, in fact, decide to abdicate.

What will it mean for the two moving forward, should they decide to move to civilian life? Will the family still accept them as their own, despite a royal title? And what of their new child, Archie?

Heavily Scrutinized

The time since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married has not been kind, to say the least. Since their union, the royal couple has been meticulously scrutinized at every turn, perhaps, unfairly.

Markle, especially, has been under the microscope, partly because she's considered an outsider as an American, but also because she's of mixed race and has been advocating for a more modern approach to what it means to be royal. Whether her criticisms are just or not, they have significantly contributed to the idea that Prince Harry and Markle don't need to be of a royal designation to be happy in life.

Currently, the couple is spending their Christmas holiday in Canada, foreshadowing what could be the beginning of the end for their association with the royal family.

A Christmas Trip to Canada?

While the royal family's representatives are not hyperbolizing the absence of Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex for the Christmas holiday, it's undoubtedly something that should be looked at as a factor propagating the dissent between the couple the and the rest of the family.

Of course, for the family, the trip to Canada is a justified one. After all, Canada is one of the Commonwealth countries, an archaic term for nations that used to be part of the British Empire. Visiting these former affiliated countries during this time of the year is odd, for sure.

But, there is good reason, as Markle's mother will be there, which is obviously important for their son, Archie. Still, the timing is peculiar and seems indicative of a growing problem. Is there really anything going on here, though? Or is it simply a matter that is being contrived and blown up by the media?

Support from the Royal Family

Although their lives have been a bit tumultuous since getting married, relinquishing their titles is not something the two want to inherently do. According to a source close to the situation, the other members of the family don't want this to occur either.

"Certainly the Royal Family would not want them to, of course. They are very valuable to the Royal Family, they are wonderful ambassadors. They are very, very popular and they are very engaging when you meet them. I have been watching the Royal Family for a long time now and Harry and Meghan have a very tactile connection with the public. That warmth is something that really benefits the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan just have to find a way to make it work for them. It’s just like with anyone in a new job – you have to find a way to do your best but also make your skills shine," the source explained.

But what if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did give up with their titles? What would change in their lives? And what about their son, Archie?

Implications of Abdication

Well, the obvious. They would no longer have the same ambassador role that the two have assumed throughout their lives. There would be a loss of public funding for things such as a home and the vehicles they drive. More importantly, Archie would forever be ousted from the royal family, with no ability to return.

If this is truly a decision that the couple is weighing in their minds, we hope that they are closely considering what would be lost in civilian life. Certainly, this is not something that will be decided upon overnight, but without a doubt, a looming storyline to follow.
