Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster are heading to Fleet Street.

The rialto royalty are joining the cast of Broadway’s “Sweeney Todd” revival as the Demon Barber and his parter-in-crime (literally) Mrs. Lovett. Tveit and Foster will begin performances on Feb. 9, 2024, and will leave the show 12 weeks later on May 5.

They are replacing Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, who were Tony-nominated for their roles and will take their final bows on Jan. 14.

Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”) directed the latest revival of Stephen Sondheim’s macabre musical, which opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre earlier in 2023. It’s been well received and well attended on Broadway, regularly playing to full crowds and winning two Tony Awards.

“Sweeney Todd” tells the tale of a vengeful barber and a resourceful pie shop owner. After Sweeney Todd is sent away by a corrupt judge, he returns to London years later seeking his family. He forms an unlikely alliance with Mrs. Lovett, who serves up peculiar pies underneath his shop. The show opened on Broadway in 1979 (and has returned for several revivals) and was adapted into a 2007 film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.

Tveit was last on Broadway in “Moulin Rouge: The Musical,” which earned him the first Tony win of his busy career. He also starred in “Catch Me If You Can,” “Next to Normal,” “Wicked” and “Hairspray.” On the big and small screen, he’s appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon,” “Grease: Live,” “Les Miserables” and “Gossip Girl.”

Foster was most recently in the sold-out Broadway revival of “The Music Man” opposite Hugh Jackman. She’ll be seen next in the upcoming adaptation of “Once Upon a Mattress” as Princess Winnifred in January 2024, before making the move to “Sweeney Todd.” Another Broadway favorite, Foster took home Tonys for “Anything Goes” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and also appeared in “Les Miserables,” “Annie” and “Grease.” On television, Foster led the popular sitcom “Younger” for seven seasons.
