Aaron Rodgers Out for the Season After MRI Confirms Jets QB Tore His Achilles: Reports

The quarterback suffered the injury during the Jets' first possession on Monday night

Aaron Rodgers will miss the remainder of the NFL season, according to multiple reports.

The quarterback, 39, was injured Monday night about four minutes into his highly-anticipated debut with the New York Jets, and suffered a complete tear to his left Achilles, according to ESPN.

After Rodgers was helped off of the field and into a medical tent in the first quarter, the team officially ruled the quarterback out before the Jets pulled off a 22-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday.

Right after the game, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said the team was “concerned with his Achilles” and that Rodgers would have an MRI scan on Tuesday, per ESPN. “MRI is probably going to confirm what we think is going to happen, so prayers tonight. But it’s not good.”

The MRI Tuesday morning confirmed that Rodgers tore his achilles, and he is now done for the season, according to multiple reports.

The incident happened near the start of the first quarter when he got sacked by Buffalo Bills' Leonard Floyd after four snaps, per ESPN. Despite getting up after the sack, Rodgers returned to the ground in pain before being helped off the field by two members of the Jets' medical staff. While he was initially labeled potentially able to return to the game with an ankle injury, he was later downgraded to out for the remainder of his season debut.

The team first confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that suffered an ankle injury and could not return to the game. However, x-rays were negative, the team said in a follow-up tweet.

Zach Wilson replaced Rodgers as quarterback for the rest of the game, which the Jets went on to win 22-16 in overtime. He is expected to start next Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, per ESPN.

“Winning the NFL is hard, regardless of who the quarterback is,” Saleh also said after the game, per the outlet. “Personally, I don’t hurt for me. I don’t hurt for our locker room. I hurt for Aaron and how much he’s invested in all this. So I’m still gonna say a prayer. I’m still going to hold on to hope.”

A torn Achilles tendon injury requires a lengthy recovery process, according to the Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS).

Once an Achilles tendon is repaired through surgery, patients must keep their foot immobilized for three to four weeks, and it usually takes about six to nine months before someone can return to regular activities like running and jumping, the HSS said.

After playing 14 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and previously expressing his desire to play for New York Jets, Rodgers was traded to the East Rutherford-based team in late April, Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed at the time.

In late July, the NFL star agreed to a two-year, $75 million guaranteed contract with the Jets that runs through the 2024 season. Though ESPN reported that his deal would be $35 million less than he would’ve made had he finished out his 4-year deal with the Packers, Rodgers explained why he signed the restructured contract.

"The team gave up significant pieces for it to be just a one-year deal," he told ESPN. "I'm aware of that. Anything could happen with my body or the success we have this year, but I'm having a blast, so I really don't see this as a one-year-and-done thing."

"We've all turned the page. It's a new chapter,” he added at the time. “I think it's going to be exciting for Green Bay, moving on. It's definitely been really fun for me out here."
