The new New York Jets quarterback, 39, made his game day debut with the team Monday night. Rodgers stepped out onto the field in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to play against the Buffalo Bills. About four minutes into the game, Rodgers appeared to be injured after a sack by the Bills' Leonard Floyd.

Rodgers was helped off the field by two members of the Jets' medical staff. The team first confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that suffered an ankle injury and could not return to the game. X-rays were negative, the team said in a follow-up tweet. Zach Wilson replaced Rodgers as quarterback.

After the game, which the Jets won 22-16 in overtime, coach Robert Saleh told the reporters it was "not good" for Rodgers, per ESPN. He may have torn his Achilles tendon, and will have an MRI Tuesday, which the team fears will confirm the tear, according to the outlet.

The official Instagram accounts for the Jets and NFL shared a video of Rodgers arriving at MetLife Stadium ahead of the team’s first game of the 2023 season, captioning the post, “Good evening, @aaronrodgers12.”

After playing 14 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and previously expressing his desire to play for New York Jets, Rodgers was traded to the East Rutherford-based team in late April, Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed at the time.

In late July, the NFL star agreed to a two-year, $75 million guaranteed contract with the Jets that runs through the 2024 season. Though ESPN reported that his deal would be $35 million less than he would’ve made had he finished out his 4-year deal with the Packers, Rodgers explained why he signed the restructured contract.

"The team gave up significant pieces for it to be just a one-year deal," he told ESPN. "I'm aware of that. Anything could happen with my body or the success we have this year, but I'm having a blast, so I really don't see this as a one-year-and-done thing."

Despite the pay cut, the QB views the move as a means of going forward.

"We've all turned the page. It's a new chapter,” he said. “I think it's going to be exciting for Green Bay, moving on. It's definitely been really fun for me out here."

Per NFL Network, Rodger’s contract is a five-year deal through 2027, with two option years to “minimize the cap impact of the $35 million roster bonus” he received a week later.

At the time, he also received $1.8 million in salary and will reportedly earn $38.2 million next year, according to ESPN.
