A24’s Janet Planet is a melancholy tale of the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. Set in 1991, the film kicks off with 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) calling her mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson) to pick her up from summer camp.

“Every moment in my life is hell,” Lacy tells her mother, though noting that she “doesn’t think it will last.”

Janet Planet is a thoughtful portrait of the namesake character, told through her daughter’s experiences. It’s also the directorial feature debut from playwright Annie Baker.

Alongside Nicholson and Ziegler, the film’s main cast counts Elias Koteas, Sophie Okonedo, and Will Patton

“In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet,” the film’s logline reads. “Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.”
