A Streaker, an X-rated Film, and More: 5 Oscars Firsts

A streaker running across the stage. An X-rated film winning Best Picture. A man named Oscar winning an Oscar. Some interesting — and, occasionally, flat-out shocking — things have happened at the Academy Awards over the past 87 years. As we look ahead to this year’s 88th installment, let us remind you of the very first time some of them happened.

For instance, did you know that Oscar Hammerstein II was the first person named Oscar to win an Oscar? He took home the statue in 1942 when “The Last Time I Saw Paris” won Best Original Song.

Perhaps less pleasant to think about, though, is the first (and, thankfully, only) streaker to grace the Oscars stage back in 1974. Or when Midnight Cowboy became the first (and only) X-rated film to win Best Picture in 1970.

Good or bad, these are the moments that have shaped Oscars history — and they’ll never happen for the first time again.
