A Second Season of ‘Big Little Lies’? Never Say Never

Nicole Kidman was recently on a flight from her native Australia when the flight attendants on the plane got seriously starstruck. Not by her, exactly, but by Big Little Lies, the HBO miniseries she and Reese Witherspoon executive-produced and shepherded to the small screen.

“That’s pretty cool. To have people that absorbed in a show with five female leads,” Kidman says.

The series is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestseller, about the ugly underbelly of a bucolic suburban paradise. Kidman plays an abused wife, and Witherspoon the town gossip. And now that the series has aired its finale, of course, there’s the question of whether a second season is possible or doable or viable. Fans hope that yes, they can see the next phase of Celeste’s life as, SPOILER ALERT, a single mother, for starters.

“There’s not another book. The characters themselves — there’s definitely storylines there,” Kidman says. “It’s just whether you can get in there and have something as compelling. Otherwise there’s no point in doing it.”

Right now, she says, there’s no plan in the works for another installment, and she and Witherspoon saw it as a one-off. That being said, “Who knows? There’s so much more to my character,” she says.

The authenticity of Kidman’s domestic violence scenes provides “a very real look at the truth of the damage. Which is probably why you could do a Season 2,” she says.

Like Kidman, Witherspoon is gratified that a show with women at its center and men on the periphery has emerged as such a talker. And she gives all the credit to the actresses headlining Lies. “There’s a gray area in all of them,” she says of their characters.
