A 9-year-old boy in Vancouver, Washington, was rescued after a terrifying collision caused him to be stuck under a school bus on Tuesday morning.

A Vancouver Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE that the collision occurred when the boy, riding his bicycle behind another individual, collided with the bus at an intersection.

"The first bicyclist crossed the road in front of the bus as it was making the turn. The second bicyclist attempted to also cross but struck the side of the school bus just behind the door," the department said.

"The bicyclist and bicycle went under the bus," the department said. "Fire personnel removed the bicyclist from under the bus and transported him to the hospital for non-life-threatening leg injuries."

In a press release shared with PEOPLE, the Vancouver Fire Department said that "the first fire apparatus arrived within minutes" at the scene.

The boy was "entangled in his bicycle under the rear axle of the bus," so the fire department requested more resources, including a VFD ladder truck and assistance from a technical rescue team.

Wooden blocks were then used to "support the bus while lifting it off the child using struts that extend hydraulically," per the department.

The Vancouver Police Department tells PEOPLE that the bus driver was "not found to be at fault and was not cited."

An Evergreen Public Schools spokesperson told The Columbian that the driver and a student passenger onboard the bus were not injured at the time of the accident.
