Luggage is one of the most important things to consider when planning a trip. Not only do you need to ensure your suitcases meet specific airline requirements — especially for that pesky overhead compartment — but you also want to make sure it is durable enough to safely store your belongings. Since luggage gets thrown around and can potentially even get damaged, longevity it key. “Airplane travel requires high-quality luggage that can withstand rough-and-tough handling,” says Jeannie Chin, the director of marketing and sales at CALPAK.

With that in mind, quality luggage starts with a quality brand and knowing where to buy luggage is a must. To help you on your search, we researched dozens of luggage brands and companies to find the best places to buy luggage. Here are our top picks.

How to Pick the Right Place to Buy Luggage

Buy From a Trusted Brand

“When shopping for luggage, it is important to purchase from a brand that has a viable history in the industry,” says Chin. Since the production of luggage requires a lot of technical skills and background knowledge, Chin says “brands with ample experience have the means to conduct quality testing to ensure the best product is delivered to the customer.”

Style

Chin says it’s also important to consider the style or design of the luggage. “I want my luggage to last for years to come, while also representing me and my evolving aesthetic,” she notes. Whether it’s the little details in the shape of a zipper puller, the colors offered, or the texture of the luggage, she adds that your luggage should "represent your personal style while serving a purpose of functionality and ease-of-use.”

Packability

The purpose of luggage is to hold all of your belongings while you travel, so you want to make sure it can do so in a way that feels functional and organized. At the very least, luggage should have useful compartments and features that make keeping your items together and organized a breeze. As an added bonus, they should also fit additional packing accessories like packing cubes to up the ante on your organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the luggage size for carry-ons?

“On average, the standard carry-on size is 22” height x 14” width x 10” depth,” says Chin. However, this can change based on the airline you're flying. Whether you frequently fly with the same airline or tend to jump around, it helps to get an idea of what bag sizes are allowed by visiting the airlines’ website. And, if you already have a trip booked, double-check the allowed carry-on luggage size well before you head out to the airport (preferably with enough time to seek alternative options) so that you can arrive in confidence that your bags will fit in the overhead compartment.

Does my luggage need a warranty?

The answer is yes and no. “While it’s not necessarily needed, luggage warranty is great because the product goes through a multitude of different terrains during travel,” says Chin. A luggage warranty can protect you financially — especially if you splurged on luggage — and replace damaged luggage (so long as it meets the requirements within the warranty). Whether you have a warranty or not, according to Chin, “if you check your luggage and it gets damaged during the process, customers should file a claim with the airline to cover the damage.”

How much should good luggage cost?

Luggage prices vary by brand and style. “Depending on your budget, a quality carry-on will range around $200,” says Chin. “However, if you are looking for additional features like lots of pockets or a laptop compartment, you can expect a price increase,” she adds. If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, you can find luggage for under $200 on Amazon, and sometimes you can get lucky with name-brand luggage at Marshalls or TJ Maxx.
