86-Year-Old International Jewel Thief Arrested (Again) After Allegedly Stealing $2,000 Bracelet

An international jewel thief, whose criminal career has spanned five decades and even inspired a 2013 documentary film, has been arrested again for allegedly trying to stealing a $2,000 bracelet from a mall outside Atlanta, PEOPLE confirms.

Doris Payne, who claims to have stolen tens of thousands of dollars in jewels, was arrested Tuesday for shoplifting, according to a police spokesman in Dunwoody, Georgia.

Payne, 86, was arrested for trying to take a bracelet worth $2,000 from Von Maur at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, the police spokesman tells PEOPLE.

She was booked into the DeKalb County jail, where she remains. She has yet to appear before a judge on the new charge. It was unclear Wednesday if she has retained an attorney.

Little more than a year ago, Payne was arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of $700 earrings from the Saks Fifth Avenue store at Phipps Plaza in Atlanta. (The status of that case was not immediately clear.)

The elderly jewel thief has been arrested more than 20 times in countries including France, Great Britain, Greece and Switzerland, according to various media reports. She also served as the subject of a documentary film, The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, which is available on Netflix.

Payne allegedly began stealing when she was just 20. Her most recent conviction was in California for a 2013 theft of a diamond encrusted ring.

“I don’t have any regrets about stealing jewelry,” she says in the documentary. “I regret getting caught.”
