Musician Theo Lengyel, an ex-rockstar who once played in the experimental rock band Mr. Bungle, was arrested in California on Tuesday in connection with the death of his missing girlfriend.

The Capitola Police Department confirmed Lengyel’s arrest in a statement shared on Facebook Tuesday. Per the statement, investigators found human remains in a wooded area in the San Francisco Bay Area in their search for Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann, who had been missing since early December.

“The identification of the human remains is pending DNA confirmation from the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office,” the statement added.

Per a media release, police said during the investigation into Herrmann’s disappearance “it became clear that foul play was involved, leading to the identification of Theobald Lengyel as a suspect.”

Lengyel, 54, was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on a first-degree murder charge, according to police. Per USA Today, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office records show Lengyel remained in jail without bond on Wednesday.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” the police department said, adding that the case remains an “ongoing investigation.”

Herrmann, 61, was last seen in Santa Cruz, Calif., and had been missing since Dec. 3, investigators with the El Cerrito Police Department said in a news release on Dec. 16. Herrmann’s relatives reported her missing after not hearing from her for more than a week, the police department said.

As previously reported by PEOPLE, following Herrmann’s disappearance, investigators found her car outside Lengyel’s home in El Cerrito, Calif. and said that “based on his actions, Theo Lengyel is a person of interest in Alice Herrmann’s disappearance and has not cooperated with the police investigation.”
