After 77 years downtown, Tully's in Quincy is listed for sale at $1.4 million

QUINCY – After almost 80 years of slinging drinks on Cottage Avenue, the building that houses downtown institution Tully's is up for sale.

Tully's opened in 1945 and has long been one of Quincy's most beloved dive bars – and one of the few places you can grab a beer at 8 a.m. A listing on BizBuySell, a commercial real estate website, says the building at 14 Cottage Ave. is listed for $1.4 million. It abuts the high-end West of Chestnut mixed-use development.

The building has two stories and a full basement and is "ripe for renovation," according to the listing posted by broker Christopher Tallino. The liquor license would transfer with the building.

"First floor has an existing bar and lounge setup. Second floor could be an apartment, offices or additional entertainment space," he wrote. "Same with the basement. Perfect location for a multiuse entertainment venue."

Tallino could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

Tully's owners could not be reached by phone Thursday. It's unclear if and when the bar will close for good, and city officials said they weren't sure either.

The building was last sold in 1995 for $120,000 to Tomahawk Realty and Mark Tully with an address in Milton.

Tully's closed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened in June 2021. Around Quincy, everyone has a story to tell about the longstanding watering hole.

"I have been going here for a very long time, my dad went here and I met my husband in this bar," a woman named Dee-Dee Richman wrote as a Google review.

"Tully's what can you say great bartenders friendly people been going for 40 years never had a problem," wrote Mike Conti.

"My favorite place," wrote Lauren Quinn. "It's an older, smoky crowd. Go here if the other bars are too young, hip and pretty and you just want to drink with cranky old guys."

Tully's appears multiple times in The Patriot Ledger's archives, including a bizarre 1991 incident where someone set a Montilio's bakery delivery van on fire and rolled it toward an old bakery location and the Tully's barroom. The van stopped a few feet short of the building and no one was injured.
