A 72-year-old woman who had been missing for four days was found safe near where her car had fallen into a ravine in rural Idaho, authorities said.

Penny Kay Clark’s family reported her missing on Dec. 5 to the Nampa Police Department, the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Four days later, two men alerted authorities that they had discovered Clark’s car, which had traveled about 200 yards down a canyon wall in the area of Map Rock and Rim roads, the sheriff’s office said.

After arriving at the scene a short time later, first responders were able to locate Clark about 40 feet away from her crashed car, per the sheriff’s office.

Multiple agencies at the scene, including Life Flight Network, Nampa Police Department, Upper Deer Flat Fire, Melba Fire, Canyon County Paramedics and Idaho Fish & Game, determined that the quickest way to remove Clark — who was conscious and alert — would be by foot.

Clark was carried out of the ravine over a period of nearly two hours and was then transferred by a Life Flight Network helicopter to an area hospital where she is recovering from her injuries, her family said.

The happy outcome was welcome news to Clark’s loved ones, who told the Idaho Statesman that the woman had only intended to run errands last Tuesday.

It was also an encouraging experience for the agencies that worked together to find the woman, Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue said in a news release.

“This is frankly one of the most miraculous incidents that I can recall in all my years in law enforcement, and it’s a true testament to the strength and fortitude of Penny Clark,” Donahue said. “It’s truly a miracle, and I’m hopeful that she makes a full recovery.”
