6ix9ine Arrested for Allegedly Choking 16-Year-Old

Rapper arrested in NYC today on a warrant from Houston

6ix9ine, the rapper born Daniel Hernandez (also known as Tekashi69), was arrested today by the NYPD, acting on an outstanding warrant from Texas, TMZ reports and a representative for the New York Police Department confirmed to Pitchfork. The arrest occurred today (July 11) at New York City’s JFK Airport as Hernandez was returning from his recent European tour, according to TMZ. The Texas warrant was for misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury, according to county records viewed by Pitchfork.

The arrest is reportedly connected to an alleged January 2018 altercation Hernandez had with a 16-year-old at Houston’s Galeria Mall. The 16-year-old claimed that Hernandez choked him. Representatives for 6ix9ine offered no comment.

6ix9ine came to prominence in 2017 with the song “Gummo.” His success has been controversial due to a court case from 2015, in which he pled guilty to a felony count of Use of a Child in a Sexual Performance. The charge stemmed from videos involving a 13-year-old girl. In one, she is naked and sitting in his lap, and in the other, Hernandez is shown “making a thrusting motion with his pelvis and smacking her on her buttocks“ while the 13-year-old performed oral sex on another man.

In May, 6ix9ine was arrested for driving with a suspended license and allegedly assaulting a police officer, according to the New York Post.
