6-year-old opens lemonade stand to take mom on a date, fulfills promise to late father
A six-year-old boy in Denver ran a lemonade stand, charging "25 cents or best offer," in order to take his mother on a date after his father passed away. For Brady Campbell, it was his way of keeping a promise he made his dad: always to take care of his mom.
Brady's dad, Brandon Campbell, recently passed away after a seven-month battle with stage four colon cancer. He was 37. The very next day, Brady opened up his stand.
"My dad and I came up with the idea of a lemonade stand to take my mom on a date because I didn't have enough money and I wanted to pay, so I did it," Brady told KDVR.
Brady's friends and neighbors showed up to support the business, and eventually, the crowd drew the attention of a Denver police officer, who called in other first responders.
According to Brady's mother, Amanda, approximately 75 people showed up to buy a cup of lemonade. Brady was able to raise $244 on the first day.
“It was amazing. You could just feel the warmth and energy and such a positive thing in such a tragic time for us. It really lifted our spirits and really made Brady so happy," Amanda said. "Brandon was a savvy businessman and wanted to teach Brady all those lessons, and I could just [see] it happening. It made my heart really happy."
Brady plans to take his mom out to sushi and to get ice cream for dessert. He's hopeful he can take her on a date once a week.
“Maybe we will have our Friday night date night. Brandon and I used to do that," Amanda said. "So I think we will start that and take the time to spend that time together."
A neighbor has set up a "virtual lemonade stand" in the form of a GoFundMe. A small portion of the money raised will go towards Brady and Amanda's date, while the rest will be donated to the Brandon Campbell Memorial Fund at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Colontown, a support group for "colorectal patients, survivors, and caregivers."
“We are happy through all this, we have brought some awareness,” Amanda said. “I feel like it gives some purpose to such a tragedy.”
