6 things to do in Anchorage this weekend

Nov. 2—November has arrived, and while most of Anchorage has stayed clean of snowfall, cool conditions are ushering in a winter vibe with Halloween in the rearview mirror. This weekend's events include a beer festival, a 1st Tap and plenty of musical options. Plus, there are more than a dozen First Friday events going on around Anchorage. Here's a look at a few highlights for the upcoming weekend.

1st Tap with Neal Francis

8 p.m. Friday, Bear Tooth Theatrepub, 1230 W. 27th Ave.

After relaunching the 1st Tap series earlier this year, the Bear Tooth is returning with a November edition featuring Neal Francis. Francis' most recent album, "In Plain Sight," was a favorite among critics. Doors open at 8 p.m. with local favorites SunDog opening the show at 9 p.m. Francis takes the stage at 10 p.m. Tickets are $48.

STEM Day

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, UAA ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, Science Circle

This free, family-friendly event promotes careers and education opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There will be tours of UAA's engineering research labs plus special demonstrations from the chemistry and physics departments. Students can tackle any one of the more than 30 hands-on activities related to science experiments, robotics, anatomy and electronic design.

Unit 1 Auxiliary Silver Tea

1-4 p.m. Saturday, American Legion Jack Henry Post 1, 840 W. Fireweed Lane

The 65th annual Silver Tea features homemade finger food, tea and coffee in real china served by past Auxiliary presidents. There will be both a live auction and a silent auction. This year's theme is the American Legion Poppy and its meaning, so there will also be many items with poppies and baskets filled with useful items. All proceeds go to veterans, active military and their families.

Alaska Crafted

3-6 p.m. Saturday, Williwaw Social, 609 F St.

The Brewers Guild of Alaska's annual event features new beverages plus many of your favorite beers, ciders and meads. First sip tickets for an early admission at 2 p.m. are $65. General admission tickets are $55 and include 12 tasting tickets, each good for one 4-ounce pour, along with an event glass.

Choir! Choir! Choir!

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Discovery Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.

This event is described as "an epic and unconventional concert experience: there are no auditions, and the audience is the choir." "Choir! Choir! Choir!" features the crowd singing classics of the 1980s from artists like Prince, Madonna and George Michael. Tickets start at $47.50.

American Perspective

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Atwood Concert Hall, 621 W. Sixth Ave.

Featuring Karen Walwyn on piano, this evening of music presents "a musical tapestry of diverse cultural influences and perspectives by American composers." Included are selections by Quinn Mason, William Grant Still, Aaron Copland and Florence B. Price's "Piano Concerto in One Movement." Tickets start at $27.50.

First Friday

Tiny Gallery: Featuring Fairbanks artist Lyndsi Harris of Evolutionary Thread, who paints and embroiders on birch bark. 706 W. Fourth Ave., 4-8 p.m.

2 Friends Gallery: Featuring Anchorage artist Gina Edwards of Gallery 31Fifty. 341 E. Benson Blvd., 5-7 p.m.

Turnagain Brewing: Featuring Zack Leslie, who will be selling prints and bringing some limited batch T-shirts. 7920 King St., 5-8 p.m.

Georgia Blue Gallery: Featuring Anchorage artist Graham Dane's show, "Forever on the Edge of Forever." 3555 Arctic Blvd., 5-7 p.m.

AK Cycle Chic: Featuring artist Hailey Thompson of Watercolorwoods, and music by Pepper Kit. 908 W. Northern Lights Blvd, 5-7 p.m.

Anchorage Museum: Featuring the opening of "Lines of Sight: Comic Art and Storytelling in Alaska." Plus, free create time in the Art Lab, Rapid Space Shorts and the opening night of "Salmon Culture," an exhibit that "celebrates the connections between salmon and Alaska Native peoples, and honors salmon as a resource that has nourished communities physically and spiritually for thousands of years." 625 C St., 6-9 p.m.

Sevigny Studio: Featuring Nathan Perry's collection "Ballads of the Visible," which includes color and black-and-white portraiture, wildlife, landscape and spiritual themes. Music by Becky Kotter. 312 G St., 6-9 p.m.

IGCA: Featuring artists Stephen Gray, Yulia Kalagaeva, Lara McAllister and Sandra Talbot. 427 D St., 5-8 p.m.

The Cove: Featuring artist Scott Clendaniel's new oil paintings and live beats by Snarley Brown and Corey Böiko. 547 Coastal Place, 5:30-10 p.m.

Snow City Cafe: Featuring Alaska painter Darrell Peterson's exhibit "Alaska Figures and Winter Light." 1034 W. Fourth Ave., 4-6 p.m.
