6 Surprising Records That Could Be Broken at 2024 Oscars

Six nominees could tread new ground and set records at this year's Academy Awards, which air live on ABC March 10

History is written at the Oscars every year.

Last year, Michelle Yeoh became the first Southeast Asian woman to win Best Actress and only the second woman of color in Academy Award history to net that award. (Halle Berry was the first, winning in 2002 for her performance in Monster’s Ball.) Ke Huy Quan became the first Vietnamese Oscar winner ever, clinching the title of Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In 2020, Korean thriller Parasite became the first non-English language film to take home the ceremony’s grand prize of Best Picture. When Moonlight won Best Picture in 2017, it became the accolade’s sole winner featuring an all-Black cast.

At the 96th Academy Awards, several records could be set by the night’s winners. From Lily Gladstone making history to composer John Williams becoming the oldest Oscar winner ever, here are all the records up for grabs at the 2024 Oscars.

Lily Gladstone could become the first Native American to win an acting Oscar.

Gladstone, 37, found groundbreaking success for her role as Osage woman Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. At the 2024 Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, she became the first Indigenous performer to claim a best actress award at the ceremonies. During her acceptance speeches, she paid tribute to her Blackfoot heritage by delivering the first part in the tribe’s language.

"Keep telling stories to everybody in this room, to everybody watching abroad. Those of you who are not actors but have a voice, have a story that needs to be heard," she said on the SAG Awards stage.

With her Best Actress nomination, Gladstone could cap off her awards season with the highest prize in the American film industry. She would become the only Native American actress to win the award.

Colman Domingo could become the first actor of Afro-Latino descent to win Best Actor.

For his work as activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin, Domingo, 54, earned a nod for Best Actor. Rustin, who played a critical role in organizing Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, was an openly gay leader in the civil rights movement.

"I was just like, ‘Wait, what? So, this openly gay man organized the March on Washington and inspired Dr. King to know about passive resistance and the teachings of Gandhi. ... Why don’t I know this?'” the actor told Netflix's Queue.

Part Belizean and Guatemalan, Domingo became the first Afro-Latino man to be nominated for Best Actor.

John Williams could become the oldest Oscar winner ever.

Legendary composer Williams, 92, has five Academy Awards to his name out of 54 total nominations. Known for his iconic Jaws (1975) and Star Wars (1977) compositions, Williams proved his longevity with another nomination for the score of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. With the nod, he became the oldest nominee for a competitive award in Oscar history.

Although Williams stated in June 2022 that he would retire after Dial of Destiny, he later told Variety this January that he will “keep an open mind.”

If Williams takes home his sixth Best Original Score, he will overtake screenwriter James Ivory (who won Best Adapted Screenplay at age 87) as the oldest Oscar winner of all-time.

Martin Scorsese could become the oldest Best Director winner.

Still in his prime at age 81, Scorsese adds a 10th nomination to his list of Academy Award nods for helming Killers of the Flower Moon. His only win came in 2006 for The Departed, but the director has since been nominated four more times for 2011’s Hugo, 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, 2019’s The Irishman and this year for Killers.

Scorsese teamed up with frequent collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro for the historical drama. Of his storied relationship with De Niro, 80, he said, “At this point, I treasure the sheer longevity, the shared experience and knowledge. The trust. The love. And also, the desire to explore together, to go further.”

If the Raging Bull director scores a victory during Sunday’s ceremony, he will become the oldest Best Director winner in Oscars history. The current record holder is Clint Eastwood, who won for Million Dollar Baby at age 74.

'Oppenheimer' could tie for the most wins in one night.

If Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic Oppenheimer sweeps all of its 13 nominations, it would break the record of 11 — held by 1959’s Ben-Hur, 1997’s Titanic and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King — for the most Oscars won by a film. The historical drama, based on the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his creation of the atom bomb, became the highest-grossing biopic of all-time in 2023.

The film is up for Best Picture, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, Best Director for Nolan, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Sound.

Thelma Schoonmaker could become the most-awarded film editor in Oscar history.

Scorsese’s longtime collaborator Schoonmaker, 84, has edited all of the director’s films since 1980’s Raging Bull. She has collected three Oscars for Best Film Editing, winning for 1980’s Raging Bull, 2004’s The Aviator and 2006’s The Departed.

In an interview with The Guardian, Schoonmaker called working with Scorsese “the greatest job in the world” and each film poses “a new challenge.”

She elaborated, “There’s nothing more different than Wolf of Wall Street, and Silence [of the Lambs], and Killers of the Flower Moon.”

If she nabs her fourth Oscar in the category with Killers of the Flower Moon, Schoonmaker will break a four-way tie to become the most decorated film editor in Academy Awards history.
