6 Surprising Horror Movie Superstars

Horror movies are frequently made, often on low budgets, and they usually feature big ensemble casts full of victims ready to be cut down. For all these reasons, there’s a rich tradition of A-list actors who got some pretty humble starts in the world of cheapo horror flicks. While the most famous example might be Jamie Lee Curtis’ shriek-ifying turn as Laurie Strode in 1978’s seminal Halloween, the trend has continued well into the present.

Mila Kunis took an early cinematic role in 2002’s utterly inexplicable American Psycho 2. And well before he took flight as Superman, Henry Cavill was dangling from meat hooks in the poorly-received Hellraiser: Hellworld. Ansel Elgort, whose starring role in 2014’s The Fault in Our Stars was responsible for many a young girl’s teary eyes, probably wasn’t making anyone but fans of the Brian De Palma classic Carrie cry when he got his start in the 2013 remake of that film. Speaking of Carrie, Chloë Grace Moretz, who played the titular pyro-kinetic teen in that version of the story, had her own humble beginning as a young child in 2005’s Amityville Horror remake. Even Zach Galifianakis, known more for his roles in comedies playing affable weirdos, starred in the 2002 submarine horror flick Belowwhich is surprising because he admits he’s claustrophobic.
