All 6 Passengers Survive Navy Helicopter Crash in California

"An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the crash,” said a Navy official about the incident in San Diego Bay, per a report

All six people who were aboard a Navy helicopter survived after the chopper crashed into San Diego Bay on Thursday, multiple outlets reported.

According to Navy Cmdr. Beth Teach, per the San Diego Union-Tribune, the MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike 41 squadron hit the water around 6:40 p.m. local time during a training exercise.

“Due to the nature of the training, a safety boat was on location and, with the assistance of Federal Fire, all six crew members survived and were promptly moved ashore,” Teach told local Fox affiliate KSWB.

Local NBC affiliate KNSD reported that the crew members were immediately moved to shore and are being medically examined.

"An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the crash,” Teach said, per NBC News.

According to the Navy’s website, the MH-60R Sea Hawk is an anti-submarine and surface warfare chopper made “for all aspects of land or maritime operations from any aviation ship or air-capable vessel.” The military branch added that the helicopter “has demonstrated unmatched multi-mission capabilities” since 2010.

A Coast Guard helicopter was also summoned to the scene to assist, an official with the Coast Guard said, per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

PEOPLE reached out to a Navy representative for further comment about the crash.

Last November, a U.S. Navy plane crash-landed into Kāneʻohe Bay after it overshot a runway at a military base in Hawaii. According to authorities, per the Associated Press, the incident involved a P-8A Poseidon plane with nine passengers onboard that missed its target landing at the Marine Corps Hawaii base.

Local outlet Hawaii News Now reported that all the passengers were rescued and uninjured by the landing after they arrived on shore. At the time, there was no official reason offered about the cause of the crash.
