The leaves are changing colors and the calendar is changing seasons. And while there are plenty of fall festivals and pumpkin patches you can visit, why not try one of the South Jersey theaters with fall productions for a play or musical where local talent is on display?

Here are six local theaters and some of their fall performances:

South Camden Theatre Company, Camden

“Alabama Story” by Kenneth Jones will be presented Sept. 22 through Oct. 1.

According to the website, the play is about a controversial children’s book stirring the “passions of a segregationist state senator and a no-nonsense state librarian in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama” as the civil rights movement was brewing.

“I didn’t want to write a docudrama that told the strict truth, but to create a collage of a play that was a mashup of theatrical forms,” Jones said in a news release.

General admission is $20 ($5 for Camden residents).

Shows are at the Waterfront South Theatre, at the corner of 4th Street and Jasper Street (Michael Doyle Lane).

Masquerade Theatre Company, Riverside

Masquerade Theatre Company is debuting its inaugural season in its Black Box Studio with the musical “Next to Normal”, which runs from Sept. 22-Sept. 30.

Musical director and pianist Jonathan Rose played the original “Next to Normal” production on Broadway. The music is by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey.

Masquerade Theatre Company was founded shortly before the pandemic and pivoted into a virtual theater. Since then, Masquerade made its home in Riverside with the goal of bringing black box performance to South Jersey.

The theatre is at 301 W. Washington Street. Tickets are $25.

Haddonfield Plays & Players, Haddonfield

Sept. 29 through Oct. 14, the theater presents “Something Rotten!”, a play set in the 1590s, featuring brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, who set out to write the world’s first musical after a local fortune teller relays that the future of theater involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time.

"Something Rotten!" is a musical comedy with a book by John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick. Music and lyrics are by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

General tickets are $30.

The theatre will present “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” Oct. 13-29.

The play was written by the late August Wilson. It will be directed by Darryl Thompson, Jr.
