52% of Oscar fans say ‘The Color Purple’ was 11th place in Best Picture race [POLL RESULTS]

When the sun rose on the 2024 Oscar nominations for Best Picture, 10 films ended up being invited to the party while countless others were not. (Hey, that’s showbiz!) For the record, the Academy Awards nominees in the top category were “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest.” Oscar fans voted in our overnight poll to tell us which also-ran likely came in 11th place in the Best Picture race, and a majority (52%) say it was “The Color Purple.” In fact, no other contender even comes close.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Hollywood bigwigs like Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, this Warner Bros. crowd-pleaser is based on the popular stage musical version of “The Color Purple,” which in turn was adapted from the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. At Rotten Tomatoes, the remake seemed to impressed both critics (85%) and audiences (95%) alike, but clearly Oscar voters had other favorites this year.

Despite not getting into the top category, “The Color Purple” still reaped an Oscar bid for Danielle Brooks in Best Supporting Actress. Her co-nominees are Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”) and Jodie Foster (“Nyad”). To date, Randolph has walked away with almost every industry prize available, including the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award. Will Randolph just keep winning all the way to the Oscars, or will voters say “Hello No!” and start anointing Brooks? Stay tuned.

The first “The Color Purple” movie from 1985, directed by Spielberg, earned an impressive 11 Oscar nominations, though it didn’t win a single one. Its bids were for picture, actress (Whoopi Goldberg), supporting actress (Winfrey), supporting actress (Margaret Avery), adapted screenplay, art direction, cinematography, costume design, makeup, score and song (“Miss Celie’s Blues”).
