During my first year in Naples, hubby and I hit Third Street South in the late afternoon. The first surprise was finding parking. We strolled into an already packed Ridgway’s Bar & Grill (where some availability remains before 6 p.m. and after 8 p.m.) and found two stools at the bar for martinis and dinner before a quick stroll to Naples Pier.

What do I remember most about that night? After walking back to the car, it took 90 minutes to access US 41 because the streets were closed, and cops were directing traffic.

I’m glad we ate early; as someone who gets hangry, if we had a reservation somewhere, we would have been tardy for our party of two.

In 2023, Dec. 31 falls on a Sunday. It’s among the restaurant industry’s most lucrative nights of the year.

The front-burner question: How much do you want to spend?

Pro Tips

  • Unlike Christmas Eve, the more desirable reservations trend toward later hours.

  • Concurrently, many prix-fixe menu tabs also increase, and that's before booze, tax and gratuity. Several on the list require a deposit or full pre-payment for food; it’s often non-refundable, so plan carefully.

  • If OpenTable and Resy are unavailable at your favorite haunt, it's often because your group has more than five guests. Call. Still locked out? Consider calling a day or two before the big night because there are always last-minute cancellations and party-size changes.

  • Dec. 31 is a night when the usual 15-minute leeway is strictly observed, given firm seating times.

  • Attending the fireworks or other festivities in Olde Naples? Allow extra time navigating road closures and traffic when making your reservation. The same holds true when using Uber.

  • Inside or outside? It's one night you may be unable to change your seating decision, so consider your options carefully.
