It's officially Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration that honors the contributions African Americans have made to this country.

Since 1976, every American president has selected a specific theme for the monthlong celebration, History.com reports. The theme for Black History Month 2023 is "Black Resistance.” According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, this year's theme explores how African Americans have resisted historical and ongoing oppression since the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Over the years, Black History Month has become one of the most celebrated cultural heritage months. Although the focus of the month is education, individuals celebrate Black History Month in various ways including themed meals, lectures, TV programs, plays, festivals and more.
