50 Cent Is Back on the Drug Cartel Beat With New Season of ‘Surviving El Chapo’ Podcast

Noted podcaster 50 Cent and investigative journalist Charlie Webster are back with the second season of their hit show, Surviving El Chapo, which tells the story of two brothers who helped bring down the notorious drug lord.

The show, which premiered last year, is centered around the first-ever interviews with Chicago-born identical twins Pedro (a.k.a. Peter) and Margarito (a.k.a. Jay) Flores, two prominent drug smugglers who managed to work their way into Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s inner circle. Ultimately, however, the Flores brothers found themselves stuck between the ultimate rock and hard place — two rival cartels who wanted their services and were prepared to kill the twins if they worked for a rival.

Instead, Pedro and Margarito chose to turn themselves into the DEA, and to avoid life sentences, they struck a deal with the feds to inform on El Chapo. The pair played a key role in the drug lord’s Feb. 2019 conviction, and were each sentenced to 14 years in prison themselves; they were released in 2020 and entered the witness protection program.

The first season of Surviving El Chapo primarily covered how the Flores twins built their drug smuggling empire and wound up as government informants. Season Two find the pair discussing their time in prison and eventually confronting El Chapo in court: “It was so ugly to be in that courtroom,” one of the brothers says in a new trailer. “Every time I looked, he’s still staring at me.”

On top of all that, the new season will chronicle how Pedro and Margarito’s wives, Mia and Olivia, both became ensnared in investigations of their own. The two women were accused of using the money their husbands made from drug trafficking while the two men were in prison, and in April they each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. (Mia was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison in July, while Olivia will is expected to be sentenced later this month.)

Season Two of Surviving El Chapo will premiere Oct. 4, with new episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays. The show is produced by Lionsgate Sound and 50 Cent’s G-Unit Audio in collaboration with iHeartPodcasts.
