Aug. 17—Double bill

Two exhibits debut Friday at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, off Route 711 south of the borough.

"An Appreciation for the Familiar" features works by artist J.D. Titzel of Greenville, Mercer County. Titzel paints in watercolor and oil and also does graphite drawings. He is inspired by rural landscapes and people.

"The Art and Novelty of Bryce Glass" is a comprehensive historical retrospective of the family-owned company and its glass tableware and novelties. Formerly based in Mt. Pleasant, the company ceased production in 1965.

Both exhibitions will run through Nov. 5.

Regular gallery hours are noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is free, although a $5 donation is suggested.

Military might

A Living History Weekend is planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Compass Inn Museum, 1386 Route 30, Laughlintown.

The event will feature an encampment of John Proctor's Independent Battalion of Westmoreland County, a Revolutionary War reenactment unit that portrays late-18th-century military and frontier life in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The group presents military demonstrations, including musket and cannon firings, with members also portraying period traders and craftsmen.

The weekend will include blacksmithing and cooking demonstrations. Tours of the historic inn and outbuildings are included in admission.

All-day music

The 10th Annual Raise Your Voice Music Festival is set for noon to 8 p.m. Saturday in Monessen City Park, off City Park Road.

Headliner is the Pittsburgh band Punchline, with other acts including Another Cheetah, The Clintones, Essential Machine, Johnny Mase, Luke and the Second Coming, Shane Turner, String Theory and Tim Litvin.

Presented by the Monessen Amphitheater Committee, the free event highlights local talent and businesses and commemorate Monessen's 125th anniversary with music, food, activities and vendors.

Country fare

The Twin Lakes Summer Concert Series presents Country Fest, with music beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater in Peach Plaza Skate Park, 1200 Georges Station Road, Hempfield.

The first act is Tim Litvin and the Nature Boy Band, followed by Christian Beck at 6:30 p.m. and Andy Davis at 8:30 p.m.

Food will be available from Lou Lou's Smokehouse and beverages from Unity Brewing. Limited seating is available; attendees are advised to bring chairs or blankets.

Doo-wop dreams

The golden age of doo-wop returns with a concert by The Skyliners from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Irwin Park, along Sweden Alley.

The original Skyliners formed in Pittsburgh, with its biggest hit coming in 1959 with "Since I Don't Have You." The group has continued to perform through the years with various lineups.
