5 things to do this weekend: Vagina Monologues, Oscar short films, Abnormal Bazaar and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Feb. 16-18, 2024.

'The Vagina Monologues'

  • WHERE: Marigold Auditorium (371 N. Church St., Winterville)

  • WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. ($16 admission)

  • DETAILS: After performing for sold-out crowds last year, The Cottage will once again be staging "The Vagina Monologues," the 1996 play by V (formerly Eve Ensler) with a cast of Athens-based actors reading selections from the show. Oscar Nominated Short Films

  • WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)

  • WHEN: Friday, Feb. 16 through Sunday, Feb. 18 ($11 admission)

  • DETAILS: Just because a film has a short running time doesn't mean it doesn't belong on the big screen. This year's Oscar nominees for Best Short Film will be presented in two programs: Best Animation (1 hr. 37 min.; Not Rated) and Best Live Action (2 hrs. 13 min.; Not Rated). Abnormal Bazaar

  • WHERE: Indie South (470 Hawthorne Ave.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: Indie South's "pop-up flea market" occurs on the third Saturday of every month at their brick-and-mortar location and features a variety of unique local vendors. Whether shopping for that perfect gift or just browsing, the market offers everything from soaps, jewelry and vintage items to vinyl records and more.

Comedy Night at Sandy Creek

  • WHERE: Sandy Creek Nature Center (205 Old Commerce Rd.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 17 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ($10 admission)

  • DETAILS: If you think that the stage for stand-up comedians in Athens ends at the bar or the night club, this showcase of local comics is out to prove that they can bring the laughter anywhere. The lineup includes Angel, Matthew Blevins, Levi Crumley, Nancy Heiges, Owen Hunt, Daemin Lee, Tim Pruitt, and Colton Stockowski.

Love Songs Show

  • WHERE: The Foundry (295 E. Dougherty St.)

  • WHEN: Friday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. ($10 admission)

  • DETAILS: Valentine's Day extends through the weekend with this Songwriters in the Round concert featuring solo acts and bands from the Athens music scene trading off tunes about love. Trisha Adams, Blank Canvas, Carey McLaughlin, Holman Autry Band, and Kip Jones are scheduled to perform. All ages are welcome.
