5 things to do this weekend: Soul Food III, Hannah Dasher, 'Earth Mama' and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Sept. 22-24.

Soul Food III

WHERE: Hendershot's Coffee (237 Prince Ave.)

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. ($12 advance; $15 at the door)

DETAILS: The third annual Soul Food event is an evening of storytelling through music and poetry featuring Milyssa Rose, Alley Bei, KColb & FreakNiq, KIVE?! and special guest Sanetra Payne. 15 percent of all ticket sales will be going to Farm 2 Neighborhood, organized by Rashe's Cuisine owner Rashe Malcolm. WHERE: The Foundry at Graduate Athens (295 E. Dougherty St.)

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ($12 admission; $10 with UGA student I.D.)

DETAILS: Savannah native Hannah "Damn" Dasher combines Dolly Parton's hair with Aretha Franklin's pipes to deliver country tunes with swagger. Based out of Nashville, Dasher amassed more than 1 million TikTok followers with her cooking show "Stand By Your Pan." "Earth Mama"

WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 22 - Thursday, Sept. 28 ($9.75 admission; $8 with student I.D.)

DETAILS: The debut feature film from writer-director Savannah Leaf is an A24 release that stars Tia Nomore in a breakout performance as Gia, a pregnant single mother with two children in foster care. With the help of social worker Miss Carmen (Erika Alexander from "Get Out"), Gia leans on her San Francisco Bay area community for support.

Ecstatic Dance Athens

WHERE: work.shop (160 Winston Dr. #9)

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ($10 admission; Free for kids ages 12 and under)

DETAILS: Drug and alcohol-free event promoters Ecstatic Dance Athens are the organizers of this indoor dance experience called "Autumnal Excursions." Vibes will be provided by DJ Charlieflower and Athens audio artist Libbaloops, and guests can pay an additional $5 for a "Sound Bath" at the end of the ceremony performed and designed by Libbaloops.

Athens Plant Community Sale and Swap

WHERE: Foxglove PlantBar (1063 Baxter St.)

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: Athens Plant Community is the host of this event that will feature local vendors with plants and plant-related supplies for sale. There will also be a "free swap" table where guests can bring in a rooted plant and take another one in its place.
