5 things to do this weekend: Ladies arm wrestling, live hip hop, aerial dance and jazz
Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Oct. 20-22.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area.
Southern Ladies Arm Wrestling
WHERE: Creature Comforts Brewery (271 W. Hancock Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ($15 admission)
DETAILS: This "G.L.O.W."-inspired ladies arm wrestling tournament will see eight fully-costumed characters face off against one another in the name of charity, with the proceeds going to Athens nonprofit women's shelter Project Safe. Attendees can vote for their favorite arm wrestler and a band will be performing 1980s cover tunes.
Canopy: The Musical
WHERE: Canopy Studio (160 Tracy St., Suite 6)
WHEN: Friday, Oct. 20 - Sunday, Oct. 22 ($15-20)
DETAILS: Entitled "Canopy: The Musical," the Athens-based studio's fall show will pay tribute to musicals with different guest dancers each night. Friday will feature Ken Khamphiphone, Saturday will feature The Modern Pin-Ups, and Canopy's students will perform as a group on Sunday. Visit canopystudio.org for showtimes.
New Horizon: The Future of Hip Hop
WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. ($5 admission)
DETAILS: This showcase of some of Athens' brightest new hip hop talents will feature 2023 Vic Chesnutt Award nominee Cardynal, Maziigotit, Kive?!, AY3K and more along with renowned local MC Squallé. The event will be hosted by ATHfactor-Liberty Entertainment CEO Montu Miller with vibes by DJ Lauryn Trill.
Bear Holloween
WHERE: Memorial Park and Bear Hollow Zoo (293 Gran Ellen Dr.)
WHEN: Friday, Oct. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ($5 admission, free for ages 2 and under)
DETAILS: Get a jump on Halloween festivities at Bear Hollow Zoo with trick-or-treating, ambassador animal encounters, educational activities and more. Some of the zoo's residents include black bears, owls, alligators, river otter, spotted skunk, wild turkey, red fox, and a variety of reptiles in the reptile house.
Segar Jazz Affair
WHERE: Hotel Indigo (500 College Ave.)
WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. ($15 admission)
DETAILS: Athens jazz DJ and musician Dwain Segar's monthly concerts always feature a guest headliner, and this show will include smooth jazz trumpet player John Dunn and his Jazzman Band.
