5 things to do this weekend: Hot Corner documentary, BouleYard Sale, 'Pee-Wee' and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Aug. 18-20.

Corner Histories: Hot Corner Audio Documentary

WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.)

WHEN: Sunday, Aug. 20 at 3 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: Producers Broderick Flanigan and Alexander Stephens will be on hand to discuss the creation of their new six-part audio documentary, "Corner Stories," part of an ongoing effort to preserve the history of Hot Corner, the well-known Black business district in downtown Athens. The producers ask that guests download and listen to "Corner Stories" at cornerhistories.com prior to the event.

‘Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure’

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19 ($9.75 admission, $8 with student I.D.)

DETAILS: Actor Paul Reubens, best known to fans worldwide as the character Pee-Wee Herman, passed away on July 30. In celebration of Reubens' life, Ciné is bringing director Tim Burton's 1985 comedy classic "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" back to the big screen for a limited engagement. 2023 BouleYard Sale

WHERE: Boulevard Historic District (Pulaski Street, Prince Avenue and Hiawassee Street)

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon (Free admission)

DETAILS: The Boulevard Neighborhood Association's yard sale event has drawn hundreds of attendees in years' past, with more than 30 area residents offering goods from their homes and personal collections to friends and neighbors in the Athens area. Athens Choral Society Presents “Pure Imagination”

WHERE: Marigold Auditorium for Arts and Culture (373 N. Church St. in Winterville)

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ($15 admission)

DETAILS: Dreams, hopes and wishes are the themes for "Pure Imagination," a pair of vocal performances by the Athens Choral Society, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Hot Diggity Dog Pawty

WHERE: Young Harris Church of Athens (973 Prince Ave.)

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon (Free, registration required)

DETAILS: Athens area families are invited to this dog-themed summer party that will feature inflatable attractions, dog-themed kids activities, a Paw Patrol-themed toddler play area and dogs for guests to pet and interact with.
