1. Canton Symphony features renowned pianist

Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday with acclaimed classical pianist Garrick Ohlsson.

Ohlsson will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Piano Concerto No. 3" in "A Romantic Afternoon with Garrick Ohlsson," the fourth MasterWorks concert of the symphony's season.

Winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, Ohlsson is noted for performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as the Romantic repertoire, the Canton Symphony Orchestra said in announcing the concert.

Rachmaninoff’s concerto is one of the most difficult pieces of music to perform, said Nathan Maslyk, director of marketing and development at the Canton Symphony.

"It's beyond difficult," he said. "Looking at the score is like looking at hieroglyphs. He's very, very skilled."

Ohlsson, friends with the longtime Canton Symphony Orchestra conductor Gerhardt Zimmermann, had scheduled the concert with Zimmermann prior to the maestro's death in June.

Also featured will be the Fourth Symphony of Robert Schumann.

There will be a lecture at 2 p.m. in Foundation Hall prior to the concert focusing on Rachmaninov’s “Piano Concerto No. 3.”
