5-Year-Old Dies After Crash with Police Car Responding to Emergency Call

A mother and father are mourning the loss of their daughter who was killed in a crash over the weekend in Auburndale, Florida.

Jalina Anglin, 5, was in the back seat of a Kia sedan when her mother, Jer’Manica Mike’Kecea Anglin, 25, pulled out into an intersection on Saturday night, colliding with an Auburndale Police Department (APD) pickup truck that was responding to an emergency, according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) obtained by PEOPLE.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 92 and Havendale Boulevard, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the preliminary investigation by the PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit, Sgt. Danny Swan was driving an APD truck  — with lights and sirens on — traveling east on U.S. 92 in response to an emergency regarding a deputy who was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect.

Swan's truck crashed into the Anglins' car, which had entered the intersection after the light turned green, even though other traffic held for the approaching police vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Jalina and her mother were taken to a local hospital where the girl died from her injuries, police said. Jer’Manica was treated for a broken wrist. Swan was not injured in the crash.

Both drivers were determined to have been wearing a seat belt, but authorities are investigating whether 5-year-old Jalina had been wearing one.

While speaking to Fox affiliate WTVT-TV, her father, Daniel Harrell, claimed that she "had a seat belt on" before she hit her head and became unresponsive.

Now he and Jer’Manica are left to remember their “bright” daughter, who was set to turn 6 on Jan. 7 and had three younger siblings.

"She was Lina. She was bright and happy. She liked to talk," Daniel said. "Everybody knows she was a good girl. She was sweet."

On Facebook, Jer’Manica posted an emotional tribute to her firstborn.

“I was so angry, but once I calmed down God makes no mistakes,” she wrote in part. “I’m blessed for the 5 years I had with you. My girl, my heart I will forever love you. Visit me in my dreams. If I could trade my life with you I would. I’m hurting so bad.”

The PCSO said that an investigation into the accident is expected to take a few months to complete but that no criminal charges are anticipated.
