It probably doesn’t come as a shock that Florida leads the nation in shark attacks, a peninsula state surrounded by ocean – and sharks – on three sides.

Roughly one of every eight shark attacks in the country occurs in Florida, according to National Geographic. It makes sense that there would be a variety of shows featuring Florida during shark week.

Here’s a roundup of some National Geographic SHARKFEST documentaries that were filmed in Florida.

Five National Geographic SHARKFEST shows that feature Florida

  • Episode three of “When Sharks Attack and Why” was filmed in St. Lucie and Palm Beach Counties and features FIU and FAU scientists who investigate what might have led to a spike in shark attacks on the Treasure Coast in 2021.

  • Episode five of “When Sharks Attack 360” also features FAU and FIU shark scientists, who provide insight on shark attacks that happened in Volusia County, specifically Ponce Inlet.

  • Nat Geo’s SHARKFEST library also includes a 2020 documentary with commentary and analysis from Stephen Kajiura, a biological sciences professor at Florida Atlantic University who appears in both of the shows above. “Shark vs. Surfer” visits shark-infested waters and surf spots around the world.

  • Season five, episode four of the original “When Sharks Attack” docuseries is called “The Shark Bite State,” and dives into Florida’s many shark attacks with victim and expert interviews.

  • Season seven, episode TK of “When Sharks Attack” is called “Mayhem in Miami” and investigates what may be causing a rise in shark attacks on Florida’s Southeast coast. The episode begins with a shark attack story out of Lantana Beach in Palm Beach County.
