5 icy sweet treats to try this summer at the Jersey Shore

There's nothing wrong with a classic ice cream sundae, milkshake or Italian ice. But sometimes, you want to try something new.

Mix things up with one of these icy sweets, which put a fun spin on summer's favorite treat.

Debbie Rogan and her family were vacationing in Hawaii this winter when they tried a local treat: ice cakes.

"We'd never heard of them before," said Rogan, who last year opened Eddin's Ice Shack, selling shave ice, cold brew and frozen hot chocolate, as an offshoot of her ice business, Eddin Ice.

In Hawaii, the treat is made with water, flavored syrup and evaporated milk. Eddin's version has shave ice and flavored syrups blended with vanilla cream, then the treat is frozen.

"Shave ice, you have to eat right away," Rogan said, whereas with the ice cakes, "you can get them home, you can throw them in your freezer. You don't have to eat it right away."

The treat comes in flavors like orange, root beer, blue raspberry, chocolate and pina colada.

"Any flavor that I do in shave ice, I can do in this," she said.

The mango lemonade at Betty's Icebox on the Asbury Park boardwalk is a citrusy, slushy take on the Mexican mangonada, a frozen mango drink flavored with chamoy, a pickled fruit sauce, and chili powder.

At Betty's, known for its healthier versions of boardwalk treats, lemonade slush is mixed with mango syrup, mango chunks, chamoy and Tajin.

"You can get it with vanilla soft serve, and it's all vegan," owner Courtney Carr said.

Flavored ice cream cones at The Sweet Shack, Berkeley Township

When a regular sugar or wafer cone just won't do, go for a brightly colored flavored cone at The Sweet Shack.

The ice cream shop, in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township, scoops its ice cream into artisanal waffle cones from Brooklyn company The Konery. Not only are these cones pretty to look at, they're flavored: vanilla, orange creamsicle, lavender and red velvet.
