5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (and Film Fans) Need to Read: News from Netflix, Indiegogo and More

1. Indiegogo: Indiegogo, the rewards-based crowdfunding platform, has sealed a film distribution deal in partnership with VHX and Yekra, Indiegogo announced in a recent post on its blog. As part of the deal, VHX will waive fees for backer fulfillment (normally 15% + $0.50 per transaction) and Yekra will waive their setup fees and annual hosting fee ($1500 between them) in addition to offering ongoing discounts. 3. Netflix News: Netflix stock jumped today on the news that the streaming video service added more than 2.3 million U.S. subscribers in the fourth quarter and could raise prices. Netflix also said it plans “to embark on a substantial European expansion” later this year, The Wall Street Journal reports.

4. More Makers: PBS will be airing six new hour-long installments in its documentary series “Makers: Women Who Make America.” Founded by filmmaker Dyllan McGee, the “Makers” project launched in 2012 and is a multi-platform initiative that also includes a growing online collection of more than 200 original video interviews. Kickstarter: Check out the Wired.com story about how “Kickstarter Has Changed Indie Moviemaking for Good,” which looks at some of the most significant Kickstarter film projects of the past year, including, of course, Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here,” which was just acquired by Focus Features at Sundance 2014.
