49th Harambee Arts Festival concludes with Recognition Banquet

Aug. 11—LENOIR — The 49th annual Harambee Arts Festival concluded with a Recognition Banquet Thursday night in the Samuel T. Sturgis Gymnatorium at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Lenoir.

On Thursday, a Recognition Banquet was held to honor the Rotary Club of Lenoir, as well as Curtis Perkins of Perkins Entertainment and the Black Google Network of Lenoir.

Author Gretchen Griffith was also in attendance to promote her new biography, "The Search for My Father, Humphrey Tja-A-Lien: Separated by Oceans but Connected by Love," as told to her by Wongalee Thomas.

The week-long Harambee Arts Festival saw different activities each day.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, the community was invited to enjoy a free Family Fun Day with games, face painting, trampoline, rock climbing, horse rides, food, vendors, and a book bag giveaway.

There was a gospel concert on Sunday, Aug. 6, by The NuFaithfulAires, The Dixon Sisters, 4ever Faithful, and LaDawnna Bradshaw.

The J.H. Jones All-Star Basketball Games took place Monday, Aug. 7, and the Senior Citizens Banquet was on Tuesday, Aug. 8. There was also a Game Night Wednesday, Aug. 9, with games such as spades, bid whist, and bingo.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Center is located at 313 Greenhaven Dr. NW, Lenoir.
