The 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards took place at the Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on Saturday, celebrating the best in LGBTQ+ media and advocacy. Ross Matthews hosted the event, which was marked by both celebration and tension.
The evening kicked off with a disruption as a protester interrupted Matthews’ opening monologue, accusing GLAAD of being “complicit in genocide.” The protesters were escorted out, while Matthews continued with the show with Don Lemon presenting an award to Gio Benitez and ABC News.
The awards ceremony honored trailblazing figures in the LGBTQ+ community, with country artist Orville Peck receiving the prestigious Vito Russo Award for a trailblazing LGBTQ+ personality and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winner Jennifer Hudson recognized as an allied media icon. Jennifer Lawrence and Laverne Cox presented each award.

In her introductory speech, Lawrence didn’t hold back her criticisms of prominent Republicans, notably targeting former Vice President Mike Pence. “Conversion therapy isn’t real, even though you think it worked on you,” she remarked, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.
The event was a mix of glamour and serious advocacy, with guests dining on roasted chicken and enjoying special Hornitos margaritas and a selection of wines.

New York Attorney General Letitia James received the loudest applause of the night. Introducing GLAAD’s president, Sarah Kate Ellis, James passionately declared, “In New York, we say gay. We say lesbian. We say bi. We say transgender, and we say history,” taking a jab at Florida’s “don’t say gay” legislation.
The event raised $350,000, primarily supporting get-out-the-vote initiatives and ad campaigns for the upcoming election season. While the GLAAD Media Awards celebrated achievements, they underscored the ongoing struggles and political battles faced by the LGBTQ+ community.
In the category of Outstanding Online Journalism Article, The Advocate’s Christopher Wiggins was nominated for Stochastic Terrorism: Links between the GOP, Right-Wing Influencers & Neo-Nazi Violence. The award went to the Associated Press’s Nicole Winfield for her piece, The AP Interview: Pope Francis Says Homosexuality Not a Crime.
