4 N.C. Teens Die in High-Speed Crash as Car Was Clocked Going 104 MPH

North Carolina State Highway Patrol tried to catch up with the car, but were unable to do so before it crashed into several trees off of Interstate 95

Four teenage boys were killed in a high-speed early-morning crash near Interstate 95 in North Carolina on Monday.

The victims were identified as driver Alan Lee Lockamy, 17, Freddy Seras, 17, Christopher Wayne Jackson, 17, and Semaj Jejai Williams, 16, a representative for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told PEOPLE in a statement.

Authorities explained that Lockamy was spotted driving a Kia Soul at 2:39 a.m. local time on I-95 in Johnston County when a trooper clocked the car doing 104 mph.

While they tried to catch up to the vehicle, troopers were unable to do so. Authorities noted that minutes later, the car crashed after exiting the interstate, running off the road and hitting a group of trees.

Lockamy and front-seat passenger Seras were trapped in the car, while backseat passengers Jackson and Williams were ejected from the vehicle.

The young men were current or former students at Smithfield-Selma High School in Smithfield, per ABC affiliate WTVD.

Lockamy’s grandmother, Kathy Lockamy, told local outlet WRAL that her grandson “was just a typical 17-year-old teenager” who “had lots of friends, family that all loved him.”

"He wasn’t supposed to be out," she said. "The last thing I told him before I went to bed was I loved him, and don’t leave the house. He didn’t listen very well."
