Los Angeles Earthquake: Magnitude 4.2 Jolt & Several Aftershocks Rattle San Fernando Valley; Celebrity Residents React – Update

UPDATE 4:51 AM: Today’s early-morning earthquake that was felt firmly in Los Angeles has been downgraded to a magnitude 4.2 from its initial 4.3. It was centered less than a mile from LA, four miles from Santa Clarita and seven miles from Burbank, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There have been five aftershocks ranging from a magnitude 3.1 less than 10 minutes after the initial jolt to a 2.7 near three hours later. No immediate injuries or instances of significant damage had been reported as of 5 a.m. local time, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. LAX remains open.

Back in April, a 3.7 earthquake rattled the city. About five quakes with magnitudes of between 3 and 4 occur every year in the greater L.A. area.

PREVIOUSLY, 4:45 AM: Los Angeles residents were given a rude awakening circa 4.30 a.m. today when a magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit the city. A smaller aftershock registered a 3.3 shortly after.

The quake’s epicenter was near San Fernando Valley. Many notable residents were rocked out of bed and took directly to Twitter, including Tyra Banks, Zach Braff, rapper Lil Nas, Queer Eye’s Karamo, NBC late-night host Lilly Singh and others. See some highlights below.
