3rd time’s the charm? 5 actors looking to strike Oscar gold on a 3rd nomination – and 21 who already did it [PHOTOS]

Most of the time, an actor doesn’t win an Academy Award on his or her first nomination. Often, the magic doesn’t happen until their second or third (or even later) try. Take the case of the late Alan Arkin, who didn’t cash his Academy Award ticket until winning for “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2006 — on his third try. The third time was the charm for Jessica Chastain, too, when she came away from Oscar night trophy-less twice before earning the gold for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” in 2021.

There are a handful of solid contenders for Oscar nomination for the 2024 ceremony who are looking to win for the first time on what they hope will be their third bid:

Robert Downey Jr., nominated for “Chaplin” in 1993 and “Tropic Thunder” in 2009 without winning who has designs on the statuette for the biopic “Oppenheimer.”

Adam Driver, who was nominated twice previously (in 2019 for “BlacKkKlansman” and 2020 for “Marriage”) and who is looking for a nomination for the biopic “Ferrari.”

Michael Fassbender, whose previous noms were for “12 Years a Slave” in 2014 and “Steve Jobs” in 2016 who is looking to finally win on a potential third shot for the David Fincher thriller “The Killer.”

Ryan Gosling, nominated is losing causes for both “Half Nelson” in 2007 and “La La Land” in 2017 who has a potential third opportunity for the megahit “Barbie.”

Carey Mulligan, whose Oscar losses came for “An Education” in 2010 and “Promising Young Woman” in 2021 who potentially has two opportunities this year to finally break through with a victory: for the Leonard Bernstein bio “Maestro” and “Saltburn.”
