'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Pray for a Good Super Bowl

The NFL season is at fourth and goal, with Super Bowl 50 looming in two weeks. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers will face off for the trophy, hoping their gritty defenses and star quarterbacks, Peyton Manning and Cam Newton, will prevail in victory.

Perhaps they should do more than hope. Maybe it’s time to take a knee — in prayer! You know, just like former Broncos QB Tim Tebow liked to do. His penchant for praising Jesus after wins was well-known, and of course, lampooned by Saturday Night Live in this 2011 sketch.

Taran Killam played the Bible-thumping Tebow, who once again thanked his Lord and Savior. “I could not do this without him!”

Then, Jesus (Will Forte) himself appears. He’s happy to take credit, but is looking for a bit of a break. “It’s not a good week if every week, I, the son of God have to come in, drop everything, and bail out the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter,” Jesus explains. “I’m a busy guy.”

Oh, and Jesus adds to Tebow, maybe he should read the playbook.

“The Holy Bible is my playbook,” Tebow responds, as Jesus nearly rolls his eyes.

Well, Manning and Newton have probably read their actual playbooks, which is why they’re competing in Super Bowl 50. Oh snap!

Saturday Night Live returns with new episodes on Feb. 6, with host Larry David and musical guests The 1975.
