'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Sneak Peek: Amber Riley and Ricki Lake Join For 'Dreamgirls' Homage

When last we saw Rebecca Bunch (Golden Globe winner Rachel Bloom) — the musically-inclined heroine who puts the “crazy” in The CW’s cult favorite Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — she was seemingly bound for Hawaii in pursuit of the object of her affections, dudebro Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III). Sitting next to her on the flight was the psychiatrist, Dr. Akopian (Michael Hyatt), she had heretofore been studiously avoiding. It looked like Rebecca was finally going to get the mental health check she so desperately needed.

Psych! And not as in, short for psychiatrist. In tonight’s episode, it’s revealed that her seatmate isn’t the real Dr. Akopian. Instead, it’s a “dream ghost” conjured out of the depths of Rebecca’s mind to pose as the good doctor. That’s why Akopian can suddenly teleport from her aisle seat, past the window seat and outside the actual window. More importantly, it’s also the motivating factor for a lavish musical number, “Dream Ghosts,” a dead-on homage to — what else? — the beloved Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

Joining Hyatt for the showstopping sing-a-thon are a pair of special guest stars: Hairspray (the non-musical version) icon Ricki Lake and Glee’s Amber Riley. We’ve got your first look at this dreamy musical number, but be sure to tune in tonight to give the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend cast a proper curtain call.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
