321 Flavor Bites: Chipotle opens in Melbourne; Another Broken Egg comes to West Melbourne

Have y'all recovered from Thanksgiving? I'm not sure I have. And I didn't even host The Big Meal.

I did, however, have a few friends over the Saturday after Thanksgiving for gumbo and football. I love making gumbo. While the roux cooks to a deep, copper brown, my house fills with the smell of home. Turkey gumbo is my official kickoff to the holiday season.

If you have some leftover turkey to use up, here's a link to my recipe. Have fun with it. Make it your own. And if you don't have leftovers, don't worry. A rotisserie chicken from the Publix or Costco works just fine.

Few things warm up a cool day like a hot bowl of gumbo.

If you're looking for other cold weather or holiday recipes, check out the Southern Kitchen website produced by some of my USA Today Network colleagues. I'm already making plans to try this fool-proof butternut squash soup recipe, and this apple crisp recipe looks pretty tasty, too.

OK, so the My Island Smokehouse in north Cocoa doesn't serve pancakes — yet — but the new venture by the folks who brought us Merritt Island Pancake House and My Island Pancake House locations in Rockledge and Melbourne now have a new venture.

The smokehouse opened Monday with counter service and a menu that includes barbecue favorites such as brisket, pulled pork and smoked turkey. Read all about how the restaurant came to be here.

Check out Thai 4 You in Rockledge

Restaurant critic Lyn Dowling is pretty picky when it comes to Thai food, but she loved Thai 4 You, the new spot that opened recently in Rockledge.

Her description of the Thai fried rice in this restaurant review has me wishing it was lunchtime already. I'm also eager to try the pad see ew and pineapple duck. Lucky for me, this one is right down the street from my house.

Food to celebrate this month

A neighbor and I made bourbon chocolate chip pecan pies in cute little Mason jars for Thanksgiving this year. It was a test-run for her spring wedding. So it's only right for us to celebrate National Mason Jar Day this week.

Also coming soon: National Repeal Day, when we pay homage to President Franklin D. Roosevelt ending 13 years of prohibition in 1933.

Here's a list of all the food-related holidays on the horizon, according to nationalday.com:

  • National Mason Jar Day, Nov. 30

  • National Mousse Day, Nov. 30

  • Worldwide Food Safety Month, December

  • Eat a Red Apple Day, Dec. 1

  • National Cookie Cutter Day, Dec. 1

  • National Peppermint Bark Day, Dec. 1

  • National Green Bean Casserole Day, Dec. 3

  • National Rhubarb Vodka Day, Dec. 3

  • Cabernet Franc Day, Dec. 4

  • National Cookie Day, Dec. 4

  • Sacher Torte Day, Dec. 5

  • National Repeal Day, Dec. 5

Until next time, happy eating y'all.
