3 underrated shows on Hulu you need to watch in May 2024

Out of the major streamers, Hulu is perhaps the most well-rounded in terms of its lineup of shows and movies. Hulu may not be able to match Netflix’s volume, but its originals also tend to have higher quality than its competitor’s. Even the library shows on Hulu are strong, thanks in part to FX’s diverse lineup of shows.

This month’s picks for the three underrated shows on Hulu that you have to watch in May include FX’s one and only superhero show, a documentary, and a mystery drama. Between these three shows, you’ll have more than enough to binge this month.

Black Twitter: A People’s History (2024)

W. Kamau Bell in Black Twitter.
Hulu

Before some billionaire decided that Twitter‘s iconic name should be rebranded as “X,” it was the social media platform for an even larger number of users than it is today. Hulu’s Black Twitter: A People’s Journey is a three-part documentary about the Black community’s role in the rise of Twitter, and how the platform led to cultural touchstone events like Black Lives Matter.

W. Kamau Bell, Amanda Seales, Jemele Hill, Roxane Gay, Sam Jay, Brad Jenkins, Alicia Garza, and April Reign are among the subjects who provide the oral history of Black Twitter. This miniseries also looks back at the highs and lows of this era for Twitter, while underscoring its important role that reached beyond social media and into real life.

Past Lies (2024)

The cast of Past Lives.
Hulu

You may get some déjà vu from Past Lies if you’re a fan of Showtime’s Yellowjackets. The premise of each show isn’t an exact match for the other’s, but they do share some common themes, as well as flashbacks to decades earlier with the main characters played by much younger performers. In the present, famous filmmaker Rita Montero (Elena Anaya) comes back to her hometown to deal with her mother’s estate. And it isn’t long before Rita is reunited with her former friends, Teresa (Belén Cuesta), Sole (Marta Etura), Carmen (Ana Rayo), and Lena (Lorena López).

The friends have largely been estranged for years over the fate of Mati Rios (Laura Wedel), who disappeared two decades earlier. Now that Mati’s body has finally been found, her cause of death won’t be the only secret that comes out. Mati’s younger sister, Detective Paula Rios (Irene Escolar), wants answers about what happened to her sister, and she’ll do anything to get them.

Legion (2017-2019)

Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza in Legion.
FX

Since X-Men ’97 has reignited the general public’s interest in Marvel’s mutant heroes, it’s time to revisit one of the best corners of that franchise. Legion exists outside of the 20th Century Fox  X-Men movies, and yet its main character, David Heller (Dan Stevens), is the son of X-Men founder Charles Xavier. David may also be one of the most powerful mutants in the world, but his mental illness keeps him from his full potential.

Fargo‘s Noah Hawley developed Legion for television, and it’s a non-superhero take on mutants that we haven’t really seen before. Aubrey Plaza co-stars as David’s friend, Lenny, who isn’t all that she appears to be. Whenever Plaza appears, she lights up the screen and adds some humor to the show. With only three seasons under its belt, Legion only had 27 episodes. But it’s still one of the best Marvel TV shows ever made.
