3-Month-Old Baby Abandoned At Walmart After Attempted Shoplifting

The infant was evaluated by medical professionals who reported her condition as “good”

A 3-month-old girl was abandoned at a Philadelphia Walmart on Thursday night, Philadelphia Police confirm with PEOPLE.

Two men and one woman left the infant at the superstore located on the 4300 block of Byberry Road. Store security confronted the three suspects about the “suspected shoplifting,” per the  Philadelphia Police. After the three suspects were met by the security guards, they fled the scene without the child.

Walmart security called Philadelphia police at approximately 11 p.m. on Thursday. The Philadelphia Fire Department’s paramedics transported the infant to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital. She was evaluated by medical professionals who reported her condition was “good,” said the Philadelphia Police.

The Philadelphia Department of Human Services took the child in their custody.

Philadelphia Police told  The Philadelphia Inquirer that they believe the baby’s parents have been identified and have since been contacted. Authorities speculate the infant’s parents were not involved in the shoplifting. An anonymous law enforcement source told The Philadelphia Inquirer that some of the suspects who abandoned the infant were allegedly not involved in the theft.

The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit (SVU) is currently investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed.

Representatives for the Department of Human Services and the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Friday.
