Perhaps the most refreshing thing about Hulu is that its new movies aren’t limited to the beginning of the month. Hulu doesn’t offer the sheer volume of choices that Netflix does, but there’s always something new to watch on Hulu almost every week of the year. This week is no exception.

This week’s picks for the three Hulu movies that you need to watch this weekend include a romance/mystery that just arrived after a long stint on Netflix, as well as a brilliant family movie and a horror story that is better viewed without children in the room.

Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

Taylor John Smith and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Where the Crawdads Sing.
Sony Pictures

Between the romance, mystery, and a murder, director Olivia Newman’s adaptation of Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing has something for almost everyone. The story revolves around Catherine “Kya” Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who was abandoned by her family. Regardless, Kya has still managed to support herself while living in the swamp since she was seven years old.

As Kya gets older, her natural beauty draws the romantic attention of both Tate Walker (Taylor John Smith) and Chase Andrews (The Iron Claw‘s Harris Dickinson). But when one of Kya’s suitors becomes increasingly violent toward her, she is naturally the No. 1 suspect when he winds up dead. And unless Kya can clear her name at her murder trial, then the life she led may be over as well.

Paddington (2015)

Paddington Bear in Paddington.
StudioCanal

For families and kids of all ages, it’s hard to go wrong with Paddington. Paddington Bear (Passages‘ Ben Whishaw) is just so loveable that it’s easy to see why he’s been a fixture of children’s literature for decades. This film is Paddington’s origin story as he travels from Peru to London in the hope of finding a new home. Henry (Hugh Bonneville) and Mary Brown (Sally Hawkins) take Paddington in, and their children adore him.

But not everybody loves Paddington. Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) hates him and all other animals with a passion. Millicent will stop at nothing to stuff Paddington and add him to her collection. What’s a gentle bear to do when presented with such a threat? For Paddington, the answer is to stay true to himself. Of course, it helps that he has friends and a new family that loves him.

Birth/Rebirth (2023)

Two nurses sit on the floor in Birth/Rebirth.
IFC Films

Unless you want your young children to have nightmares, avoid showing Paddington as a double feature paired with Birth/Rebirth. This psychological horror movie is strictly for the adults in the household. Birth/Rebirth is a version of the Frankenstein story that you haven’t seen before, because there’s no big lumbering creature. And there’s no question who the real monster is.

Speaking of whom, Dr. Rose Casper (Eileen‘s Marin Ireland) is the woman who has successfully resurrected a little girl named Lila Morales (AJ Lister) after her untimely death. When Lila’s mother, Celie Morales (Judy Reyes), discovers that her daughter’s body is missing, it doesn’t take a detective to figure out who was behind the theft. But finding Lila alive in Rose’s care is a game-changer for Celie. Keeping her alive will require Celie to abandon any moral code that she ever lived by until her hands are just as bloody as Rose’s.
