The post The 25 Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2024 appeared first on Consequence.

There’s an exciting heap of content coming to televisions this year. Some of our most anticipated TV shows of 2024 include big swings coming from established creators like Armando Iannucci and Donald Glover; new directions for franchises like The Walking Dead and True Detective; and great directors like Lulu Wang, Gus Van Sant, and Leslye Headland bringing their unique visions to both original stories as well as iconic properties.

Even the spinoffs and new seasons sound more intriguing than usual — an Orphan Black series with Krysten Ritter (potentially multiple Krysten Ritters)? Hell yes. Colin Farrell continuing to do whatever the hell he was doing in The Batman? Absolutely. A new take on that talented Mr. Ripley, featuring Hot Priest himself, Andrew Scott? Shut up and take our subscription fees.

It’s easy to be excited right now about all these shows, and while certainly there will be disappointments as the year progresses, TV in general will never disappoint us. So read on for our most anticipated 2024 TV shows.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Echo, and X-Men ’97 (photos via Marvel)

Network/Platform: Disney+

Marvel has eased up on the gas, so we’re only getting three Disney+ MCU series in 2024: First comes Echo, the mature Hawkeye spinoff which debuted January 10th under the new “Marvel Spotlight” banner and gives us more Daredevil. Later, we’ll see Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, the WandaVision spinoff expanding upon the supernatural MCU and the Young Avengers, and X-Men ’97, reviving the classic Saturday morning cartoon. — Ben Kaye

True Detective: North Country (January 14th, 2024)

Written and Directed by: Issa López
Cast: Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes
Network/Platform: HBO

The fourth installment of True Detective stars Jodie Foster as a detective investigating the whereabouts of eight men who work at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station and have vanished without a trace. The reviews are in, which means we can confirm that it’s a return to True greatness. But bundle up while you watch it.Abby Jones

Expats (January 26th, 2024)

Created by: Lulu Wang
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Ji-young Yoo, Jack Huston, Sarayu Blue, Brian Tee, Bonde Sham, Flora Chan
Network/Platform: Prime Video

Nicole Kidman hasn’t chosen a book-to-TV project yet that failed to be at least intriguing, and with the incomparable Lulu Wang in the directing chair, Expats certainly fits the bill. Adapted from The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee and set in Hong Kong, Expats promises sex, lies, at least one death, and perhaps, Emmy love for the stacked cast. — Wren Graves

Masters of the Air (January 26th, 2024)

Executive Producers: Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg
Cast: Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Barry Keoghan, Nikolai Kinski, Stephen Campbell Moore, Nate Mann, Raff Law
Network/Platform: Apple TV+

The US has yet to oblige Spielberg and Hanks with another war where we’re the good guys, and so the Executive Producers are returning to WWII. The follow-up to Band of Brothers and The Pacific will see the UK’s most exciting young actors, plus Austin Butler, all trying out a normal American accent. Jokes aside, it looks spectacular. — W. Graves

Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans (January 31th, 2024)

Created by: Ryan Murphy
Cast: Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Tom Hollander, Treat Williams
Network/Platform: FX

The second star-studded installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud takes on the story of famed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his complicated relationships with the women of New York high society, played by a dazzling assortment of actresses (see above). Did he love them? Did he loathe them? Maybe a little bit of both, and the way he wrote about them made that a little too clear. — Mary Siroky

Genius: MLK/X (February 1st, 2024)

Executive Producers: Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood
Cast: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Aaron Pierre, Jalyn Hall, Weruche Opia, Jayme Lawson, Ron Cephas Jones, Gary Carr, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Lennie James, LisaGay Hamilton, Ashley Romans, Donal Logue, Griffin Matthews
Network/Platform: Nat Geo/Hulu

Before Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Aaron Pierre play Scar and Mufasa in that December Lion King prequel, they’ll face off as two linked but very different historical leaders. The Genius biopic series has attracted no shortage of talent to play great minds, but this season promises a great battle of ideas, too. — W. Graves

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (February 2nd, 2024)

Created by: Francesca Sloane, Donald Glover
Cast: Donald Glover, Maya Erskine, Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, Ursula Corbero
Network/Platform: Prime Video

Donald Glover returns to TV this year with Prime Video’s reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the 2005 film that starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Alongside PEN15’s Maya Erskine, the two will play married spies in danger of catching “real” feelings for each other. Though it’s a tall order to beat Pitt and Jolie’s electric chemistry, Glover and Erskine certainly seem up for the challenge. — Paolo Ragusa

Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 12) (February 4th, 2024)

Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)

Created by: Larry David
Cast: Larry David, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, J.B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn
Network/Platform: HBO

There’s bad news and good news. The bad news is that Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming to an end. The good news is another season is on the way! Despite the show hitting HBO in early February, plot details remain few and far between. If we had to guess, though, the season will probably involve breaking unspoken rules and epic miscommunications. — Jonah Krueger

Abbott Elementary (Season 3) (February 8th, 2024)

Created by: Quinta Brunson
Cast: Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, William Stanford Davis
Network/Platform: ABC

Finally, Quinta Bronson’s wonderfully warm workplace comedy returns for a third outing, picking up on the antics of Janelle James’ Principal Ava Coleman, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s hysterical Barbara, and the nail-biting “will they or won’t they” connection between Bronson’s lovable Janine and Tyler James Williams’ awkwardly charming Gregory. — M. Siroky

Avatar: The Last Airbender (February 22nd, 2024)

Developed by: Albert Kim
Cast: Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Elizabeth Yu, Daniel Dae Kim
Network/Platform: Netflix

The beloved animated fantasy series is receiving a Shyamalan-free live-action treatment, this time courtesy of Netflix. While the streamer’s success with anime adaptations isn’t 100% wins, 2023’s One Piece did prove it was possible. We’re excited to see how the Four Nations come to life, and how memorable performers like Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee fare in action alongside young Gordon Cormier, set to star as Aang. — M. Siroky

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (February 25th, 2024)

Created by: Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira
Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Pollyanna McIntosh, Terry O’Quinn
Network/Platform: AMC/AMC+

There have been (to date) five different Walking Dead spinoffs, but this sixth one has a romantic hook for fans who might have stopped watching years ago: Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), reunited at last. The most exciting element: The Tony-nominated Gurira is a writer/co-creator as well as star, and it’ll be fascinating to see what her voice adds behind the scenes. — L.S. Miller

Shogun (February 27th, 2024)

Created by: Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks
Cast: Cosmo Jarvis, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai
Network/Platform: FX

Featuring Hiroyuki Sanada as a feudal lord of the era caught up in high-stakes political intrigue, this lavish adaptation of James Clavell’s classic book features a lot of consultants behind the scenes to ensure that this FX drama accurately depicts a fascinating period in Japanese history. With a large ensemble and so much to explore, this is an easy must-see. — L.S. Miller

The Regime (March 3rd, 2024)

Created by: Will Tracy
Cast: Kate Winslet, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Martha Plimpton, Guillaume Gallienne, Hugh Grant
Network/Platform: HBO

Look, Kate Winslet doing anything on HBO is immediately of interest. (Kate Winslet Entourage reboot when?!?) And The Regime sounds like the best kind of nuts, a political drama created by Will Tracy, who previously wrote multiple episodes of Succession and 2022’s The Menu. Which is to say, expect the unexpected. — L.S. Miller

Girls5eva (Season 3) (March 14th, 2024)

Girls5eva Season 2 Review
Girls5eva Season 2 Review

Girls5eva (Peacock)

Created by: Meredith Scardino
Cast: Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, Renée Elise Goldsberry
Network/Platform: Netflix

Girls5eva can’t be stopped. After the Peacock series was left idle, Netflix swooped in to save the show — and now, we get the chance to see what Dawn, Wickie, Gloria, and Summer are like on tour as everyone’s favorite reunited girls group. If it’s anything like the two Peacock seasons, there will be showbiz jokes galore — and at least a few unforgettable new pop songs. — P. Ragusa

Palm Royale (March 20th, 2024)

Palm Royale (Apple TV+)

Created by: Abe Sylvia
Cast: Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Carol Burnett
Network/Platform: Apple TV+

As you can see above, there’s some brilliant talent involved with this Apple TV+ dark satire, set in the highest echelons of Palm Beach society. Kristen Wiig stars as Maxine Simmons, a 1969 social climber determined to break through the snobbery of the aforementioned rich and beautiful — at maybe any cost, including her own soul. — L.S. Miller

3 Body Problem (March 21st, 2024)

Created by: David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, Alexander Woo
Cast: Saamer Usmani, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Sea Shimooka, Benedict Wong, Tsai Chin, John Bradley, Eiza González, Liam Cunningham
Network/Platform: Netflix

Coming from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood producer Alexander Woo, 3 Body Problem adapts Liu Cixin’s time-jumping novel of the same name. With a plot built around the sudden disappearance of scientists in the present day and mysterious, supernatural forces lurking in the distance, the series could be Netflix’s next big hit. — Eddie Fu

Fallout (April 12th, 2024)

Created by: Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner
Cast: Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones, Johnny Pemberton, Dale Dickey, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Chris Parnell, Zach Cherry
Network/Platform: Prime Video

Rejoice, video game fans: The Fallout adaptation is finally a reality. Produced by Amazon, the series takes a broader approach to the source material than, say, a show like The Last of Us, as Fallout’s plot seems more inspired by the franchise’s general lore than any specific narrative from the games, at least according to the teasers. Either way, look out for Easter eggs galore and, hopefully, quality television. — J. Krueger

The Franchise (TBD 2024)

Armando Iannucci, photo by Roberto Ricciuti/WireImage

Created by: Armando Iannucci, Sam Mendes, Jon Brown
Cast: Billy Magnussen, Jessica Hynes, Darren Goldstein, Lolly Adefope, Isaac Cole Powell, Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Richard E. Grant, Daniel Brühl
Network/Platform: HBO

Armando Iannucci’s track record as a series creator isn’t flawless — Avenue 5 being a sad misfire — but the premise for his new HBO satire feels like a slam dunk, as it takes aim at the drama surrounding the creation of superhero movies. The announced cast is staggering (Richard E. Grant!), and given that the superhero genre in general might be on the decline, the Veep creator’s timing is beyond perfect. — L.S. Miller

House of the Dragon (Season 2) (TBD 2024)

Created by: Ryan Condal, George R. R. Martin
Cast: Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Steve Touissant, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall
Network/Platform: HBO

HBO has promised us more dragons and incest in 2024, but it’s how House of the Dragon will continue to evolve in Season 2 that’s the real question mark, especially as the new episodes won’t feature any more time jumps, leaving the main cast intact to cope with all the betraying they keep doing to each other. (And after the events of the Season 1 finale, anticipate those betrayals getting even more intense.) — L.S. Miller

Orphan Black: Echoes (TBD 2024)

Created by: Anna Fishko
Cast: Krysten Ritter, Keeley Hawes, Amanda Fix, Avan Jogia, James Hiroyuki Liao, Rya Kihlstedt
Network/Platform: AMC/AMC+

The original Orphan Black, which premiered in 2017, was centered around an incredible leading performance from Tatiana Maslany. Because of the love the series earned in its first run, expectations are high for the upcoming spinoff. While details are still somewhat slim, a time jump to 2052 will take the Clone Club somewhere totally new for viewers, with Krysten Ritter set to star as a different type of replicated woman. (We think.) — M. Siroky

The Penguin (TBD 2024)

Created by: Lauren LeFranc
Cast: Colin Farrell , Cristin Milioti, Clancy Brown, Michael Zegen, Michael Kelly, Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau
Network/Platform: Max

After delays due to 2023’s WGA strike, The Penguin is finally back in production and set for a late 2024 release. Following the events of The Batman, the series will see Colin Farrell reprise his transformative role for eight episodes. As of yet, there’s been no indication if the Dark Knight himself will make an appearance, but a Pattinson fan can hope! — J. Krueger

Ripley (TBD 2024)

Ripley (Netflix)

Created by: Steven Zaillian
Cast: Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn, Dakota Fanning, Eliot Sumner
Network/Platform: Netflix

Following its hit 1999 film adaptation, Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel The Talented Mr. Ripley is headed to the small screen with Ripley, starring Fleabag’s star Andrew Scott as the titular con man. Set in the early 1960s, the series should at least deliver some solid travel porn, as Signore Ripley heads to Italy. — A. Jones

Network/Platform: Disney+

Star Wars fans have been given a lot of TV to chew on over the last few years, and 2024 is no different: Two new series are set to drop on Disney+ in the coming months, and they both look appealing. While the Jude Law-starring Skeleton Crew will take place in the same time frame as The Mandalorian, Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte promises a first look at the Jedi-centric High Republic era of Star Wars. — P. Ragusa

The Sympathizer (TBD 2024)

Developed by: Park Chan-wook, Don McKellar
Cast: Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Ky Duyen, Sandra Oh, Robert Downey Jr.
Network/Platform: HBO

Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2016 bestseller The Sympathizer is getting the TV adaptation treatment thanks to HBO and A24. Robert Downey Jr. not only takes on his first recurring TV role, but plays multiple characters in the series, which also features Sandra Oh and Hoa Xuande. The Vietnam War spy drama arrives on Max sometime this year. — A. Jones

The Veil (FX)

Created by: Steven Knight
Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Josh Charles, Dali Benssalah, Yumna Marwan, Haluk Bilginer
Network/Platform: FX

The incredibly prolific Steven Knight teams up with The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss for an FX drama about which not much is known, save for the basic premise: “Two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London.” Sounds like quite the road trip. — L.S.
